An advanced directive is a document signed by a competent adult giving direction to health care providers about treatment options in certain circumstances. There are several types of advance directive: Aliving will affords individuals the opportunity to state in advance what their treatment preferences are in the event of several scenarios. Amedical power of attorney (MPOA) form appoints a patient advocate to act on behalf of the individual. A do not resuscitate order (DNR) states that resuscitative efforts are not to be initiated if breathing stops or the heart stops beating. Resuscitative efforts include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), transcutaneous cardiac pacing, defibrillation, advanced airway management and artificial ventilation.
