Cardiac Rehab

Our medically supervised exercise programs are designed to improve both health and quality of life. Our facility offers two medically supervised exercise programs–Cardiac Rehab and Vital Steps. Cardiac Rehab is typically the first step towards recovery after a cardiac event. Vital Steps is available to individuals with health concerns who want help starting an exercise program.

Cardiac Rehab

Cardiac rehab focuses on personalized and individualized treatment plans in conjunction with exercise, education, nutrition, stress management and group discussion. We believe in participants taking an active role in their recovery, while working closely with the Cardiac Rehab team, consisting of registered nurses and respiratory therapists certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Exercise is tailored to the participant’s specific physical abilities and needs. Throughout each session, blood pressure, heart rate and heart rhythm are carefully monitored utilizing computerized technology. Oxygen levels and blood sugars are also monitored.

Weekly educational sessions help participants learn more about heart disease, the risk factors, stress management, diet and nutrition, and many other topics designed to help patients successfully improve and manage their health.

The Cardiac Rehab patients receive an hour-long exercise session three times each week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Cardiac Rehab is a prescription program lasting for 36 sessions or 3 months. A formal doctor’s referral is required for participation and Medicare and most insurance plans cover the program for those who meet specific criteria.

Qualifying criteria for cardiac rehab:

  • Cardiac surgery such as coronary bypass or valve surgery
  • Heart failure that meet certain criteria
  • Heart Transplant
  • You can check with your insurance plan to determine copays or other requirements

Benefits of Attending a Cardiac Rehab Program:

Vital Steps

Some people with special health concerns such as heart or lung disease, diabetes or cancer are reluctant or unable to participate in a traditional fitness program. Vital Steps is a specialized program designed to safely meet the needs of these individuals. The goal of the program is to help participants better understand how to manage their disease process and to make regular exercise part of their lives.

Each exercise session is supervised and includes such exercise methods as a treadmill, stationary bicycle, recumbent step machine, and upper body ergometer. The methods of exercise and degree of difficulty are selected based upon each individual’s progress and ability to exercise. Participant’s blood pressure and heart rates are monitored before and after each exercise session. Oxygen levels and blood sugars are monitored as needed. Vital Steps is offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Each class is approximately one hour.

Benefits of Regular Exercise:

  • Improved blood circulation
  • Improved oxygen levels and energy
  • Reduced stress
  • Increased optimism and enthusiasm
  • Enhanced psychological well-being
  • Improved sleep
  • Weight loss and improvement in cholesterol and triglyceride levels
  • Improved blood pressure
  • Enhanced strength and endurance
