GRMC General Surgeon Serapio Vela, M.D. Performs 500th Robotic Procedure

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) General Surgeon Serapio Vela, M.D., has reached a significant milestone accomplishment, achieving his 500th robotic surgery this past quarter at GRMC.

Dr. Vela completed his first robotic procedure at GRMC in February of 2014, and has currently performed more than 530 robotic cases. His robotic procedures include Ventral and Inguinal Hernia repairs, Gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), as well as colectomy procedures.

Since 2014, GRMC has offered general and gynecological robotic surgery, allowing physicians to perform minimally invasive procedures with the assistance of robotic arms, giving better accuracy, flexibility, and control. This method of surgery is less invasive, reduces a patient’s hospital stay and allows for a faster healing process. In addition, robotic procedures involve less risk of bleeding and infection, as well as minimal scarring.
