GRMC Recognizes Certified SANE Team

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is proud to recognize our SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) nurses for recently obtaining their certifications in both adult/adolescent & pediatric SANE care through the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Texas.

The requirements to becoming adult/adolescent & pediatric certified include more than 80 hours of classroom education, examinations, collection of evidence, as well as courtroom observations, which is nearly a two-year process. To meet these training requirements, the team worked in conjunction with the office of OB/GYN Alyson Kirchner, MD, GRMC emergency room physicians and nurse practitioners, Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, and Comal County Crisis Center.

“I am extremely proud of our SANE department for their commitment to providing the best possible care”, says Executive Director of Emergency Services Nicole Patek, MSN, RN. “Our SANE team is dedicated to meeting the needs of our community and we are thankful to all those who collaborated in training. It is an honor to be able to provide these very important services to help keep patients local during their time of crisis.”

The team is comprised of Courtney Burgoon, BSN, RN, CA/CP-SANE, Isabel Downs, RN, CA/CP-SANE, Morgan Starr, BSN, RN, CA/CP-SANE, Karen Jordan, BSN, RN, CA-SANE, and Deborah Aponte, MSN, RN, SANE. The team works closely with a multidisciplinary team that includes law enforcement, Child Protective Services (CPS), Guadalupe County Attorney’s office, Guadalupe County Children’s Advocacy Center, and Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter.

About SANE
SANE nurses specialize in forensic training for the care and treatment of sexual and domestic assault victims, while providing confidential comprehensive management and treatment for patients of all ages. The role of a SANE nurse is to perform forensic examinations, collect evidence, as well as educate and counsel victims of sexual and domestic assault. The SANE nurse is essential in connecting the patient with resources to help them begin the healing process. Our SANE team is proud to provide care and support to Seguin and the surrounding communities. While there is not 24/7 coverage of SANE services, the SANE team is willing to assist the patient in any way to facilitate services to meet their needs.
