GRMC Treats First Patient with Innovative Blood Pressure Procedure

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center (GRMC) is proud to announce that we have successfully treated our first patient using the new Symplicity Spyral™ renal denervation (RDN) procedure, an FDA-approved treatment for certain patients with high blood pressure. This milestone reflects GRMC’s ongoing commitment to bringing advanced medical technology and exceptional care to the communities we serve.

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in November 2023, the Symplicity™ blood pressure procedure is designed for patients whose hypertension remains difficult to control despite lifestyle changes and medication. High blood pressure affects nearly 50% of U.S. adults and is the single largest contributor to death worldwide. Even more concerning, about 80% of adults who are aware they have hypertension do not have it under control.

The Symplicity procedure is minimally invasive and targets overactive nerves near the kidneys that can contribute to high blood pressure. During the procedure, performed under mild sedation, a physician inserts a very thin tube into the artery leading to the kidney and delivers energy to calm these nerves. The tube is then removed, leaving no permanent implant behind.

Clinical studies have shown that the Symplicity blood pressure procedure can help safely lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of serious health complications such as heart attack and stroke. Because it works continuously, it provides an “always-on” benefit to support long-term blood pressure control.

“High blood pressure is a significant problem for patients all around the world,” said Pisamai Cowan, Director of GRMC’s Cardiac Cath Lab. “While medications and lifestyle changes help many patients, studies show that a large number still don’t have their blood pressure under control. The Symplicity blood pressure procedure offers an innovative option that doesn’t require a permanent implant and can help patients regain peace of mind. We are proud to offer this advanced treatment to the people of Seguin and the surrounding communities.”

At Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, advanced technology is matched with compassionate, patient-centered care. Our highly skilled physicians, nurses, and support staff are dedicated to delivering world-class care in a welcoming, community-focused environment.
