Diabetes Care at GRMC

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1 in 4 of them don’t know they have it and about over 1/3 of the US population have pre-diabetes. It is important to know how to manage your health and control this disease. At Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, we offer a variety of ways to educate and empower our patients to take back their health.

Diabetes Education Programs

GRMC offers two Diabetes Education Programs, both with the goal to educate participants in the care and management of their diabetes. Read more below to see which program best fits you.

Diabetes 101
This class is an accredited Diabetes Education Program. The program is a five week series is taught by licensed nurses. The program includes access to a diabetes educator for a year after completion of the program. A provider referral is required to attend the program.

Class topics include:

  • Monitoring your blood sugar, controlling your ABC’s and problem solving
  • Diabetes, the human body and learning how to lessen the risk of complications
  • Healthy eating, meal planning and getting active
  • Medications to control your ABC’s
  • Living with diabetes and how to stay on track

Assess your risk for Type 2 diabetes

Gestational Diabetes
This class focuses on complications for the mother, such as preeclampsia and eclampsia, as well as the baby. Examples of focuses include hypoglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, pre-term and respiratory distress, as well as jaundice.

Class topics include:

  • What is gestational diabetes and the risk factors for gestational diabetes
  • Treatment of gestational diabetes: medications healthy eating, physical activity, monitoring your blood sugar levels
  • How to reduce the risk of complication to mother and baby
