When Should You See a Gastroenterologist?
Digestive symptoms can affect your quality of life and may be a sign of an underlying gastrointestinal condition. If you’re experiencing ongoing symptoms or are due for preventive care, a gastroenterologist can help diagnose the cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment.
You may benefit from seeing a gastroenterologist if you experience:
- Frequent heartburn or acid reflux
- Ongoing abdominal pain
- Difficulty swallowing
- Blood in the stool
- Chronic diarrhea or constipation
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent nausea or vomiting
- Family history of colon cancer
- Need for routine colon cancer screening
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, don’t ignore them. Early evaluation by a gastroenterologist can help identify the cause and lead to more effective treatment.

Colon Cancer Screening Saves Lives
Colonoscopy is the gold standard for detecting colorectal cancer and identifying precancerous polyps before they develop into cancer. Regular screening plays a critical role in preventing colorectal cancer and protecting your long-term health.
Most adults at average risk should begin colon cancer screening at age 45, although some individuals may need earlier screening based on their family history, personal medical history or other risk factors. If you’re unsure when to begin screening, talk with your provider about whether a colonoscopy is right for you.
