Psychiatry

Psychiatry focuses on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. People seek help for a variety of reasons including panic attacks, thoughts of suicide, feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.

There are numerous causes, such as stress and chemical imbalances, of mental health issues, and a psychiatric evaluation can help identify a problem, its cause, and treatment options.

Many people often do not seek help because they are embarrassed or are not quite sure who to see. Being able to recognize when you or someone you care about may need help is important, and there are a number of signs that indicate a psychiatric evaluation is a good idea.

  • Inability to control emotions
  • Substance abuse
  • Changes in work or school performance
  • Changes in sleeping patterns
  • Withdrawal from social interactions
  • Frequent night terrors or temper tantrums
  • Unexplained physical illness
  • Excessive anxiety, worry or sadness
